FAQ
HUNTS PREMIUM BEEF Consumer Q&A
PRODUCT & QUALITY
Where does your beef come from?
All our beef is reared on our Red Tractor Assured farm in Gloucestershire. The farm has been in our family since 1958.
How are your cattle raised?
Our cattle are bucket-fed milk until weaning, and then their diet consists of grass/maize/cereals/pulses, and they are housed in our farm buildings.
What breed of cattle do you use?
Our Aberdeen Angus cattle are Aberdeen Angus X. Our Wagyu cattle are Wagyu X.
Is your beef grass-fed, grain-fed, or a mix?
Our cattle are bucket-fed milk until weaning, and then their diet consists of grass/maize/cereals/pulses.
Is your beef free range?
No
What welfare standards do your cattle meet?
Our cattle are all reared to Red Tractor assured standards, and this is audited regularly.
Is your beef dry-aged, wet-aged, or neither?
Our beef is dry-aged for approximately 21 days before being packaged.
How long is your beef aged for?
Approx 21 days. We have found that ageing it for any longer does not benefit the meat, as it already has a delicious flavour due to the higher marbling content from keeping the animals for longer.
Is your beef suitable for people with allergies?
Our Beef does not contain any added chemicals or ingredients other than the burgers and smashed burger mix. The specific ingredients of these products can be found on our website.
Is your beef hormone and antibiotic-free?
Our cattle are not treated with hormones, but they may have received antibiotics during their life if the need arose.
Is your beef suitable for halal or kosher diets?
No, our meat is not halal or kosher. Our animals are sent to a Red Tractor assured abattoir.
What's the difference between your cuts?
It’s not possible to answer this question as there are too many. The website is very informative on each cut and where this comes from on the animal, as well as the suggested cooking instructions.
Which cut is best for a Sunday roast?
For a slow-cooked Sunday roast, our favourite is a rolled Brisket. The gravy is delicious, and the slow cooking method means you can leave it for a long time whilst you enjoy your Sunday at leisure.
For a quicker option, we recommend a Topside or Silverside cooked until pink in the middle.
Which cut is best for a special occasion?
A rib of beef is a showstopper for special occasions such as Christmas Day. For dinner parties or date nights, our whole fillets (Chateaubriand), individual fillets or T-Bones will impress!
Which cut is easiest to cook?
Our steaks and burgers are easy to cook in a frying pan for a quick meal. Alternatively, our diced beef and mince can be used in a slow cooker with a few ingredients to create a lovely, tasty dish for dinner. See our website for suggested recipes (to be added shortly)
Do you sell offal or less common cuts?
We are not currently stocking offal, but we can take bespoke orders for this. Just drop us an email at hello@huntspb.co.uk. Our butcher is a master craftsman, and as such, we are able to offer less common cuts such as Gaucho, Bravette, Ranch and Denver steaks. If you have a specific cut you require, please contact us, and we can see if we can accommodate this.
Is your mince lean or full-fat?
Our mince is full-fat and very tasty!
What fat percentage is your mince?
Approx 25%
Do you sell bones for stock or dogs?
We don’t currently sell bones.

FRESHNESS & STORAGE
Does the beef arrive fresh or frozen?
Our meat is dispatched frozen unless specially noted on our website.
How long will the beef keep in the fridge once it arrives?
Fresh items will have a use-by date on the label. If items have been previously frozen and are put in the fridge, please consume them within 24 hours after the item has fully defrosted, up to a maximum of 2 days.
Can I freeze the beef when it arrives?
If an item arrives fully frozen, you can put it in the freezer and follow the use-by date on the item.
If you put fresh items in the freezer, please do this as soon as possible to preserve the meat in its optimum condition. We recommend eating the burgers, mince and smashed burger mix within 3 months and other items within 6 months. Although meat can be frozen for longer, the quality will start to deteriorate.
For fully or partially defrosted meat, it is recommended that this is stored in the fridge and used within 24 hours, but up to a maximum of 2 days.
How do I defrost it safely?
The best way to defrost safely is to place the frozen item in the fridge. Make sure your meat is fully defrosted all the way through to ensure even cooking. Once fully defrosted it is recommended that you use it within 24 hours or up to 2 days maximum.
How can I tell if the beef is still fresh?
You can tell if beef has gone bad in the fridge by looking for signs such as a sour or unpleasant odour, changes in colour (such as grey or brown patches), or a slimy texture.
Why does vacuum-packed beef sometimes look darker or have an unusual smell when first opened?
When first opened, vacuum-packed beef may appear darker or have a strange smell. This is due to the removal of oxygen. This is normal and nothing to be concerned about. However, if the meat smells sour or putrid, please discard it.
How should I store different cuts?
Please see above for the storage of different items, whether frozen or fresh.

How do I cook the perfect steak?

SUSTAINABILITY & VALUES
- Is your packaging recyclable?
Our boxes and tape are recyclable. The foil bags and ice packs aren’t recyclable, but they can be reused for family picnics (we are looking into alternative options that are more sustainable).
How do you minimise your environmental impact?
Sustainability is at the forefront of our business. Our beef cattle have long formed part of a sustainable family farm, producing renewable energy from the cows' manure, resulting in Beef that has a low carbon footprint. This includes the use of our own organic fertiliser from the cows' manure, meaning we do not need to import artificial fertilisers to grow our crops to feed the animals.
Do you support British farming?
Absolutely, we are British farmers! and are passionate about providing premium British Beef to the UK.
How do you ensure animal welfare standards are met?
We are a Red Tractor assured and are a family farm who care deeply about raising our livestock to the highest standards.
Are you a family-run business?
Yes, we are a family of third-generation beef farmers and renewable energy producers.
Do you support any charities or community initiatives?
We sponsor local grassroots rugby and cricket clubs. See below an extract from Lydney RFC regarding our support: “This support enables the Club to provide facilities for the local community and for the youth of the Forest with its rugby set up. This help enables the Club to run teams across all age groups, including some female sides from mini to Senior levels. The newly extended Changing room area and a refurbished Clubhouse following the flood in 2024 can be used by all in the community for a wide range of events. Lydney RFC Chairman Duncan Sleeman added, ‘The Hunt family have a real passion to support the local community and we are grateful for their help in supporting youth sports both now and for future generations to come.’”
In addition, we aim to take on several apprentices each year to help support young adults into the working environment.

EXPERTISE IS THE DRIVING FORCE
As third generation beef farmers, we are proud to bring you the finest quality British Aberdeen Angus and Wagyu, home grown on our farm in Gloucestershire. We hand pick the top 5% of our animals to sell direct to the public to bring you the very best British Aberdeen Angus and Wagyu on the market.
Our animals are intentionally kept for longer to get the very best marbling, texture and taste/flavour. These maturer animals give us the opportunity to offer much larger steaks, with a greater depth of flavour and a higher level of marbling. The larger animals also develop a higher level of fat which benefits the flavour and gives the optimum texture for delicious Beef.
ETHOS IS PARAMOUNT

The welfare of our animals is of the utmost importance to us. As a family farm, established in 1965, we carry a deep rooted passion for top quality British beef, ethically reared to the highest of standards.
